Editing 11/03/12

11/03/13

Today I started to play around with the video transition effects to see what would fit in with out music video and style of music.
At the start of the video, when the shots are switching from singing, dance and piano I added some cross dissolve transitions which really helped to bring the video to life and capture the sombre tone we are looking to create.

Our media teachers watched our music video today and gave us some really good feedback on how to make the video better. They said that the dance and Hainault clips need to be spread throughout the video to make it more even and so that the clips tie-in well.

Our teachers said that the black and white shots of the piano bits were good and it was a shame that they weren't continued throughout. A suggestion that was made is that we could film some more piano bits and add guitar scenes, making it seem like Ellie is playing the instruments. This also would tie-in well with our music genre and give the video something a little more special.

Taking these suggestions on board, Ellie and I agreed to film some piano and guitar shots as well as re-film the notepad clips.
This does seem quite time-consuming, especially so late in the coursework process, but I think that the music video will benefit a lot from this and it shouldn't take so long to edit as the video is almost complete and we've become more accustomed with the editing program.

Poster Ideas

My partner and I have started to brainstorm some ideas of what to include on our digipak and poster. We both agreed that we wanted something original and unusual for our poster to make it different from what everyone else is doing in our class. Here's a brainstorm of ideas which we have got now; which we hope to expand:

We also researched online and looked at examples of posters and art work to help expand our ideas, this also helped to visualize what our finished poster would look like.
Below are examples of posters/artwork which caught our eye:

This one I thought, the design was very interesting as it was like a mix of modern and vintage- making an artistic statement.

I liked this poster because it effectively made the artist the centre of attention. The setting is very rural and natural hinting that the type of music would be easy-listening. The red flowers and white in this poster have all been enhanced; this creates contrast and draws the reader's eye to the title. The font is interesting as it is swirly, which can be seen as girly, and it is clearly printed so it is easy to read.

Here is a typical pop (artist's) poster, this poster is very bold and catches the eye effectively. The artist is highlighted as she is in blue, contrasting the hot pink background. The singer's name is in big, bold, capital letters with the band underneath her name; this represents their role as they are the accompaniment supporting her.
At the bottom is a smaller image of the album also stating that the album is  available to buy now - pushing downloads/purchases.

Michael Jackson "Thriller"

Of course Michael Jackson's "Thriller" had to be the Greatest music video of all time.
The music video cost $700,000 to make and the director of An American Werewolf in London directed the music video, who was a big director of the time and his films were known for their special effects. It was a big scale production as there were special effects, a well-known director, the different sets, make-up and costumes and dancers/extras.
The video itself is a short film, and has an old style horror elements like what you would expect in a Hammer Horror production (e.g. suspense and eerie sets) and included the respected actor, in both Hollywood and the horror community, Vincent Price.

The UK premiere of the video was on Channel 4 at midnight, it was an event everyone awaited for and was an instant impact. The famous thriller dance routine had everyone in the clubs up and dancing, the routine itself is still legendary even now and had featured even in films like '13 going on 30,' everyone was sucked into the 'Thriller Mania.'
The album is the best selling album of all time and Michael Jackson himself is one of the biggest recording artists to date.

A-ha "Take on me"

This is probably one of the most well known music videos and is number 3 of the 100 greatest music videos.
When the song was first released it disappeared in the charts, it wasn't until the band decided to make a music video that the song became a real success.
The video uses rotoscoping, which is a type of animation where you draw over the film to create this matte, hand drawn effect, this was expensive but at the same time the effects were revolutionary. The video won 6 awards out of its 8 nominated.
